Description

PHO Grand Rounds: To PICO or Not to PICO: What is the Question?

Formulating a well-designed research question is the foundation of an effective research project. However, there are inherent challenges in developing research questions within public health (PH) contexts due to its multidisciplinary nature. The PICO (Population/Problem, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome) model is ideal for intervention/therapy questions rooted in clinical medicine; but, it is often not suitable for qualitative or mixed-methods research conducted within PH contexts. This session will introduce alternate frameworks for defining research questions and briefly outline their suitability for application to PH subject domains. Practical examples will demonstrate the selection, application and use of appropriate frameworks for developing answerable PH research questions.
